Hiking on the Arlberg in winter is an intense experience: fresh snow under your shoes, large snowflakes dancing through the air, the silence during a snowfall when the snow dampens the sound and only your own steps can be heard in the snow. In addition to the winter sports experiences in the mountains, activities in the valley such as cross-country skiing and snowshoe hiking are equally as popular in Lech and Zürs.
Every year, visitors return to the region between Zug, Älpele, Lech, Zürs, Spullerwald and Tannegg. Relaxation in the fresh, clean air, freeriding and ski touring in an area boasting the best snow conditions are just a few reasons. Some want to go skiing with the family where they once spent their winter holidays as kids, all with the aim of getting to know the Arlberg region a little better year after year. On skis or snowboard, with snowshoes or warm, dry winter hiking boots they set out in search of discovery. From the comfort of your hotel in Lech or Zürs, you can reach the starting point of your planned hiking route on foot or by ski bus. Depending on your preference, you can opt for a longer or shorter route. On our hiking map you will find a selection of groomed winter hiking trails so that you can plan your hike in detail, based on elevation gain, distance and duration. If you are planning something more ambitious, combine routes together. Or if you just want to stretch your feet quickly, simply shorten a route when the opportunity presents itself.
The right equipment
Which shoes do I need for hiking in winter? On our groomed winter hiking trails, we recommend sure-footed hiking boots or winter boots. If you want to hike through the fresh snow, you should definitely wear snowshoes to save strength and keep your feet dry when stopping in for refreshments. What equipment do I need for winter hiking? We recommend a wind- and waterproof jacket as well as waterproof ski pants that will allow you to move freely. Gloves and a beanie are also essential. It is important to wear sunglasses when the weather is nice and especially in snowy, sunny conditions the eyes must be protected. Cosy Stuben parlours and huts with sun terraces along the hiking trails invite you to recharge your batteries and warm up. When is the best time for winter hiking? The perfect time is as soon as there is snow. The hiking trails are groomed within a very short time and invite you to go hiking. Places where you can go winter hiking everywhere in Lech Zürs am Arlberg can be found on the hiking map.
