Stone witnesses on the path through millions of years
When we stand on the Rüfikopf today, we not only overlook one of the most beautiful regions in the Alps—the historic Tannberg in the north and the legendary Arlberg in the south—but we also sit enthroned on a legendary witness to the history of the Earth. Enormous tectonic forces, fascinating geological processes, and far-reaching climatic influences created and shaped this mountain over hundreds of millions of years. Its rock tells of the formation and disappearance of entire continents and seas, its sediments contain valuable relics, and its shape bears witness to the emergence of the Alps as well as its formation by mighty glaciers.
Hiking among shells and squids
What was long a mystery and, for our ancestors, bizarre phenomena in rock and stone, has been unraveled by science and has brought to light insights into long-gone eras of our Earth. Today, a diverse range of geological phenomena offers us exciting insights into the origin and structure of mountains, the development of the landscape, and the richness of sunken worlds. The area around Lech was once located near the equator. Where alpine terrain is found today, shells and prehistoric “squids” once thrived. What once rested under deep blue water rose to become an imposing peak towering over a massive ice field. The Geological Trail invites you on a fantastic journey through time – along “stone witnesses” on a path through millions of years. Discover the secrets of a world that opens up other dimensions of time!
Hike through a magnificent alpine “rock garden” where splendid flowers and herbs form enchanting contrasts to the varied rock formations, and where Lake Monzabon nestles like a sparkling diamond! Marvel at timeless jewels, geological treasures carved in stone and time!
At the various geological stations, you can learn about the history of the carbonate and fossil-rich rocks that make up the summit area of the Rüfikopf. Subtle red markings help you to better recognize the various geological formations and fossils. A very beautiful and informative geotrail! In addition, the technical content has been explained well for a broad target audience. ”
