"House of Liquid Gold"
Clemens Berger's fast-paced satire takes us into the crazy and yet all too real beautiful new world, where everything becomes a commodity and a single mother can become a social media icon.
Babies need milk – mother’s milk or formula. This is where Clarissa comes in with the "House of Liquid Gold": Women like Maya, who has so far lived off odd jobs as a single mother, pump their excess milk in a safe environment and receive a share of the sales. This goes well until the largest milk powder manufacturer can no longer deliver and purchased breast milk becomes vital. When Maya aligns herself with the desperate women with their hungry babies, she becomes a social media icon: She is celebrated and bombarded with shitstorms, she receives millions of offers and death threats. However, Berger's novel is more than a bizarre portrayal of our society: He tells a touching story of solidarity, the struggle for survival, and maternal love.
