In the heart of nature, in the last house on the street, on a farm. This is where Atelier LaMarie was created, along with a workspace, an exhibition space, and a small home for art and creativity. For photography and painting. For sculpture.
How did you come to open a atelier in Oberlech?
MARIE: I had wanted to open an art space in Lech for a long time. But with the outbreak of the pandemic, things moved faster than I had expected. My studies were moved entirely to the virtual space and I moved back from Vienna to my hometown of Lech. Without further ado, my brother Johannes and I decided to convert the unused youth room at Muxelhof into an exhibition space, where his photographs in particular would find a home – and so Atelier LaMarie was born :)
What is there to discover in your atelier?
MARIE: An integral part of the studio is Johannes' landscape photographs, which were taken mainly in and around Lech. In addition, there are changing exhibitions by artists with a special connection to Lech / Vorarlberg.
In addition to books, a small shop also offers space for handicrafts and the works of emerging artists and young companies.
Is there a particular (artistic) direction that you are pursuing?
MARIE: I myself find fulfillment particularly in writing. However, the studio is intended to be a place where all forms of art can find a home and be brought to life in workshops.
Was there anything that had a big impact on you during your art studies?
MARIE: What certainly had a big impact on me was the exchange with fellow students, professors, supervisors, and other art enthusiasts. This always opens up new perspectives and broadens your horizons.
In terms of technical skills, I learned above all to go into detail. In our fast-paced world, we are used to constantly scrolling, clicking, or walking quickly through museums and exhibitions. My studies have taught me to break this pattern and to devote an entire museum visit, a lecture, or even an entire semester project to a single work and immerse myself in it. I think this conscious engagement with the details (of a work of art) was my most important learning experience.
Art in Lech and Oberlech. A challenge or a privilege?
MARIE: Definitely a privilege. Not only are we very fortunate to be able to work creatively amid the mountain scenery of the Arlberg and be inspired by the breathtaking nature, but we also have the opportunity to exchange ideas with people who come to Lech in the mountains from all over the world with their ideas and thoughts. That is a great opportunity.
