About the program
Richard Wagner's Siegfried Idyll is a tender birthday serenade for his wife Cosima on her 33rd birthday in December 1870 – on the occasion of the birth of their son and heir Siegfried, nicknamed Fidi. The dedication reads: “Tribschener Idyll with Fidi-Birdsong and Orange-Sunrise” and was premiered in the wide staircase of the villa by Lake Lucerne. Wagner artfully incorporated various motifs from the opera Siegfried. The cheerfully relaxed Idyll is considered one of his most beautiful orchestral compositions.
On the horn, the signature of opera Siegfried, Richard Strauss's father excelled. He was the most famous horn virtuoso of the 19th century, making the romantically sounding instrument familiar to his son. The Bavarian composer wrote his first Horn Concerto early on. 60 years later, as a reminiscence, he followed with the second Horn Concerto, which was premiered in 1943 at the Salzburg Festival by the Vienna Philharmonic under Karl Böhm. The beautifully complete masterpiece is characterized by simple elegant grace and exuberant virtuosity and is one of Strauss's most popular concertos.
The fairy-tale medieval legend of the love of knight Raimund for the beautiful mermaid Melusine was transformed by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy into a touching concert overture, into an atmospheric mood picture of intimate poetry. The Fair Melusine was created in 1833/34, inspired by a visit to the opera to focus on this material. “It sounds heavenly, sweet and passionate,” wrote a friend after the premiere in London. Musically contrasted by strong dramatic interjections, delicate undulating waves transport one into an enchanting underwater world, to which Melusine must finally return and which inspired Wagner in the Rheingold prelude.
W. A. Mozart's festive and joyful Symphony in C Major from 1780 was the last one composed as a court musician in his birthplace Salzburg. Majestic and solemn sounds the first movement with fanfares and march rhythms, yet there are also quiet and contemplative moments, like light and shadow. The subsequent calm surprises with melodic strength and transforms in the finale into an exhilarating southern Italian tarantella.
