Der Weiße Ring - The Interview

with Daniel Huber, Race Director and Youth Director of the Ski Club Arlberg

The race: interview with race director Daniel Huber

1000 ambitious winter sports enthusiasts, 22 kilometres of race course and 5 lift rides: that is the short version of the legendary race "Der Weiße Ring". Nothing is 0815 at this race, Daniel Huber also confirms: "The length and the layout of the course as well as the diversity of race participants is what makes the race special. The special atmosphere and anticipation before and during the race day make this event unique." However, in order for everyone to be happy at the finish line at the end of the race, it also requires the highest level of safety precautions and precise course planning and preparation in advance.  For race director Daniel Huber, the focus of his work is: "For me, it's all about the safety of all starters. We go to enormous lengths to ensure technical safety equipment for possible falls." To ensure all-round safety, he also appeals to the starters themselves: "Only compete healthy and fit and show respect for all other participants during the race.

“It's not about an Olympic medal, but much more about the smile on your face - even if your thighs are already burning.”

This smile on Daniel Huber's face is not only important for the male and female starters. As youth director of the Ski-Club Arlberg, this positive mood is also very important to him among the youngsters: "We place particular value on good interaction with each other. If we then also succeed in getting the next generation excited about winter sports, then we've succeeded in a lot."

The fact that the Ski Club Arlberg has often succeeded in inspiring the next generation with enthusiasm for skiing is shown, among others, by member Patrick Ortlieb - former Austrian ski racer, Olympic champion in 1992 and, among other things, world champion in the downhill in 1996. His sporting personality is also not entirely insignificant for the Race Der Weiße Ring, says Klaus Huber (Managing Director of Ski Arlberg West): "Many Olympic and world championship medallists from Lech and Zürs helped us to make the race known with their participation in the very first race. Among them especially Patrick Ortlieb. He already took part in the first Der Weiße Ring Race, got involved in the organising committee and brought numerous skiing greats to the race through his contacts."

If we look back, we can discover some prominent racers on the course of the race: in addition to Patrick Ortlieb, Peppi Strobl, Harti Weirather or Tom Stiansen were already participants in the legendary ski race. But also Andreas Goldberger, Rainer Schönfelder and David Coulthard put on their skis and experienced the Arlberg from its challenging side.

Now the only question is: When will you also take on this legendary ski circuit on the Arlberg?
