Where is Skyspace Lech located?
Skyspace-Lech is located on the right-hand side along the (winter) hiking trail towards Auenfeld | Gaisbühel, above the district of Oberlech, at 1,780 meters above sea level at the so-called Tannegg.
How do I get to Skyspace-Lech?
By public transport | by taxi | by shuttle
You can reach Oberlech by local bus no. 704 or by taxi. The local bus goes to the Schlössle stop. The taxi can take visitors to the Hotel Mohnenfluh. The distance from the bus stop or Hotel Mohnenfluh to Skyspace-Lech must be covered on foot in both summer and winter. Walking time: approx. 10-15 minutes
In summer, a shuttle service is offered for public tours due to the limited operating hours of the local bus at sunset. The shuttle departs from the Dorfhus stop.
By the Oberlech cable car and on foot
However, you can also hike to Skyspace-Lech on foot from Lech or from the Oberlechbahn mountain station. This is possible in both winter and summer.
Walking time from Lech: approx. 60-90 minutes
Walking time from Oberlech, Burgplateau: approx. 30-40 minutes
By the chairlift
In winter, you can take the Schlosskopflift lift to Oberlech and walk from there to Skyspace Lech. It takes about 10 minutes on foot.
By skis
When skiing, you can reach Skyspace-Lech via the Grubenalpe downhill run (No. 210).
Is it possible to arrive by car?
No. There are no parking facilities in Oberlech. Therefore, it is not possible to travel there by private car.
Does a public bus run to Oberlech?
Local bus no. 704 goes to Oberlech. The Schlössle stop is the closest one to the Skyspace-Lech.
Bus travel times vary depending on the summer, mid-season, and winter schedules. Bus schedules are available at the Lech Zürs Tourism office, the Lech municipal office, and local businesses, or online on the Lech municipal website and the Lech Zürs Tourism GmbH website.

When is Skyspace Lech open?
General opening hours
Skyspace-Lech is open to the public throughout the year (regardless of the season), provided that no guided tours are taking place and weather conditions permit.
December 1 to April 19 Opening hours: 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
April 20 to May 31 Opening hours: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
During this period, there are NO guided tours due to the black grouse mating season.
June 1 to October 31
Opening hours: 1 hour before sunrise to 1 hour after sunset
If you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check the website skyspace.com under “Visit Calendar” to see if the Skyspace is closed for a guided tour.
Do I have to take part in a guided tour to experience James Turrell's light program at Skyspace-Lech?
No. Skyspace-Lech can be visited at any time, as long as no public or private tours are taking place. Before your visit, please check skyspace-lech.com under “Visitor Calendar” to ensure that Skyspace-Lech is open to the public on your desired date.
To experience James Turrell's light program, you must visit at sunrise or sunset. The light concept designed by James Turrell can only be experienced at these times of day.
When do I need to be at Skyspace-Lech to see the light show at sunset?

Can I visit Skyspace-Lech at sunrise?
Yes, Skyspace-Lech can also be visited at sunrise. However, as there is no guarantee that the path to Skyspace-Lech will be cleared and accessible in time in winter, a visit at sunrise is recommended in summer.
When do I need to be at Skyspace-Lech if I want to see the light show in the morning?
ATTENTION! If you want to watch the light show at sunrise, you must be there approximately 50 minutes BEFORE sunrise.

Can I visit Skyspace-Lech regardless of sunrise or sunset times?
Yes. Skyspace-Lech is also freely accessible during opening hours during the day, as long as no guided tours are taking place. You can see whether and when guided tours are taking place on the website skyspace-lech.com under “Visiting Calendar.”
What will I see during a visit during the day?
During the day, the changing moods of the sky can be observed in conjunction with the wandering beam of sunlight, as long as the weather allows the dome to be opened.
When is the dome of Skyspace-Lech closed?
In case of heavy rain or snowfall, the Skyspace is covered by a movable dome shell mounted on a metal structure next to the building.
What can I see when the dome is closed?
When the roof is closed, the second light program designed by James Turrell for Skyspace-Lech is shown. This creates the effects of a full-field room in the ceiling area, where space, light, and color merge and a feeling of disorientation sets in.
Is there an entrance fee for visiting Skyspace-Lech?
Access to Skyspace-Lech during opening hours is free of charge. Voluntary donations are welcome. These can be placed in the slot located under the screen in the entrance tunnel during your visit.
Participation in a guided tour costs €15. Children under the age of 6 are free.
Are there toilets on site?
No. There are no restrooms on site.
Is the Skyspace Lech barrier-free accessible?
No. Unfortunately, there is no barrier-free access to the entrance of Skyspace-Lech.
Can I visit Skyspace-Lech with children?
Visiting Skyspace-Lech is also an experience for younger children. Whether it makes sense to take younger children on a guided tour is at the decision of the parents. Parents should ensure that other visitors are not disturbed (e.g., by constant running around or talking too loudly).
Can I bring my dog?
Dogs are generally allowed at Skyspace-Lech. However, we ask that you be considerate of other visitors and keep your dog on a leash if necessary.
What else should you bear in mind when visiting Skyspace Lech?
- In both summer and winter, it is important to wear good footwear and appropriate (warm) clothing. Skyspace-Lech is located at an altitude of almost 1,800 meters above sea level in alpine terrain! Please note that even in summer it can be quite cool at this altitude.
- If you visit Skyspace-Lech at the beginning or end of the day (sunrise, sunset), your visit will start or end in the dark. We therefore recommend that you bring a light source (flashlight, headlamp, cell phone with flashlight function).
- In adverse weather conditions (such as thunderstorms, snowstorms, fog, etc.), a visit is not recommended, or Skyspace-Lech may also be closed.
- Some visitors may experience dizziness when viewing the light art. Please leave Skyspace in a timely manner if you experience dizziness.
- Skyspace-Lech is a work of art. Eating and drinking in the Sensing Room is not permitted.
- Please be considerate of other visitors.

When are public tours held?
- June 1 – October 31: Every Friday evening at sunset (German)
- December 1 – April 19: Every Thursday evening at sunset (German)
Every Tuesday evening at sunset (English) - Due to nature protection requirements, there will be no tours from April 20 to May 31.

When does the tour start?
The sunset tour begins 5 minutes before sunset. The sunset time can be found at skyspace-lech.com under “Visitor Calendar.” Click on the day of the tour → a field will appear on the right showing the exact times.
How much does it cost to take part in a public tour?
The tour costs €15.00 per person. Children under 6 years of age are free. For Lech Card holders, participation in a public tour is included in the price.
I have a Lech Card. Do I still need to register for the tour?
Yes. Registration for the tour is essential. Lech Card holders can register online at skyspace-lech.com/besuchen/.
If you already know your Lech Card number at the time of registration, please enter it when registering.
How much does the shuttle cost?
The shuttle costs €10.00 per person. The shuttle must also be paid for children under 6 years of age who are participating in the tour.
How do I get my ticket for the public tour?
Tickets can be purchased online using a credit card, or at the Lech Zürs Tourism Information desk in cash, or with a debit or credit card.

When is the deadline for registering for a guided tour?
Registration is possible until 12 noon on the day of the tour.
Is there a minimum number of participants for public tours?
A minimum of 5 participants is required for the tour to take place.
Does the tour take place in all weather conditions?
The tour will take place even in case of rain or snowfall. In this case, visitors will be shown the second program designed by James Turrell, which visualizes a full-field effect in the dome area.
In case of extreme weather conditions (e.g., heavy snowfall, thunderstorms), the tour may not be able to take place.
What happens if the tour is canceled at short notice?
In the event of a last-minute cancellation by the organizer, registered participants will be informed of the cancellation by telephone or email. The amount will be refunded automatically. If the ticket was purchased at the Lech Zürs Tourism Information desk, an automatic refund is not possible. Please request a refund in person during opening hours at the Lech Zürs Tourism Information desk.
Are there also guided tours at sunrise?
Public guided tours at sunrise only take place on the summer solstice on June 21 and as part of the Philosophicum in September. Private tours can be booked at any time.
PLEASE NOTE! The tour starts 50 minutes BEFORE the sunrise time indicated in the calendar.
In winter, private sunrise tours can only be organized at short notice, as the weather determines whether the path to Skyspace-Lech is accessible at dawn.
What can I expect from a guided tour?
In addition to experiencing James Turrell's light installation, visitors will receive a brief introduction to the history and architectural features of Skyspace-Lech, as well as information about the artist and his artistic approaches.
Furthermore, the opening and closing of the dome, which is a special feature of Skyspace-Lech, will be demonstrated and the artist's second light program will be shown. During the tour, participants will therefore have the opportunity to experience aspects of both of James Turrell's major body of work (Skyspaces and full-field spaces).

The price for a private tour is €450, including VAT.
