Lech Mountain Mirror

The new art installation by Snøhetta on the Arlberg.

Where the Mountains Reflect in the Water

High above Lech, on the roof of the Zugerberg cable car right by Balmalp, a place has been created that lets you experience the mountain scenery in a whole new way: the "Lech Mountain Mirror" – an artistic intervention by the internationally renowned architecture firm Snøhetta.

A vast water basin captures the surrounding peaks and lets them mirror on its surface – sky, rock, and clouds merge into an image that shifts with every breath of wind and every play of light. Stepping stones, barely visible just beneath the water's surface, lead you right into this interplay of reflection and reality – to a viewpoint that invites you to pause.

A place to linger

Around the Mountain Mirror, a green area with seating and lounging surfaces made of larch wood and natural stone boulders invites you to rest. Entry to the area is accessible and free of charge – whether for a quick photo stop or an extended break in the mountain sun, this is a whole new way to take in the vastness of the Arlberg mountain landscape.

Getting up there, stress-free: experience the Lech Mountain Mirror by cable car

A mountain experience with no hiking required: the modern Zugerbergbahn cable car takes you from the village of Zug up to 2,100 m in just a few minutes. The spacious 10-person cabins with panoramic windows are suitable for everyone – whether with a stroller, wheelchair, or simply for relaxed enjoyment.

In short: ride up, arrive, enjoy – a mountain experience has never been this simple.

Great neighbors: the Balmalp

Just a few steps separate the Lech Mountain Mirror from the sun terrace of Balmalp, from which the installation is perfectly visible. Those enjoying the view can easily combine their visit with a stop for a bite to eat – the menu ranges from alpine classics to Mediterranean dishes.

Highlight: Balm Sundowner on August 22

At the "Balm Sundowner," the Zugerbergbahn cable car runs until 9:30 pm – just in time to experience the sunset reflecting in the water of the Mountain Mirror.

Snøhetta – the creative minds behind the installation

The Lech Mountain Mirror was conceived and realized by Snøhetta – led by Patrick Lüth, partner and managing director of the Innsbruck studio, who has developed the project with great care since the very first discussions.

For him, it was never about the installation's outward form, but about an inner state: that moment of pause in which one truly encounters the landscape. Not action, but reflection – a conscious lingering in the presence of the mountains. The mirrored water surface thus becomes a quiet stage for this experience: with every breath of wind, every shift of light, a new image emerges – no two visits are ever the same.

In this way, the Lech Mountain Mirror becomes part of Lech's artistic narrative – in the spirit of "Horizon Fields" and the "Sky Space Lech" – extending this artistic tradition with a quiet, striking new work.
