Long-distance hiking in Lech Zürs 2025 - Discover more with every step

Green Ring, Lechweg, Arlberg Trail and Lechquellenrunde start the 2025 summer season with new impetus.

Lech Zürs am Arlberg, 10 May 2025 – Summer in Lech Zürs invites you to slow down, to breathe deeply, and to explore the Alpine world one step at a time. Whether it’s long-distance hiking across ridgelines and passes, themed trails full of poetry and storytelling, or tranquil walks along wild rivers – the region offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. This year, four exceptional routes shine with new features and renewed inspiration.

The Green Ring – A Storybook Trail in Three Chapters

A 28.5-kilometre circuit that combines Alpine nature with contemporary mythology: the Green Ring turns hiking into a journey of imagination. Over 35 interactive installations, literary stations, summit books, sculptures and hut libraries make this trail a unique experience for all ages. In 2025, the trail celebrates its 15th anniversary – now more accessible than ever with new cable cars and family-friendly themed routes.

  • Stage 1: Rüfikopf cable car – Geology Path – Monzabonsee – hut library
  • Stage 2: Seekopf cable car – Zürsersee – glacial basin – Madlochjoch
  • Stage 3: Zug – Balmalp – Gipslöcher – Dragonfly Lake – Lech

New additions include the “Gipsis Puzzle Trail” and the interactive “Playful Hiking” path in Oberlech – making the Green Ring more creative, diverse and family-friendly than ever.

Lechweg – From the Source to the Falls

Crossing three regions and two countries over 125 kilometres, the Lechweg is one of Europe’s premier long-distance trails – and has once again been certified as a “Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe”. Starting from Lake Formarin near Lech and ending in Füssen, the route passes through wild river landscapes, traditional villages and castles from Austria’s and Germany’s cultural past.

Eight themed Lech Loops (with a ninth to follow in 2025) offer circular trails that branch off the main Lechweg route – ideal for short hikes or day excursions. From quiet forest paths to royal castles, each loop adds a new perspective to the Lechweg.

Loop highlights include:

  • In the footsteps of the Walser: a historical trail through the Tannberg region
  • From waterfall to waterfall: a cooling trail along babbling streams
  • The Castle Loop: through the Ehrenberg fortress complex and its iconic suspension bridge
  • The Royal Castles Loop: with views of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau

The Lechweg remains a perfect combination of natural spectacle, cultural storytelling and well-maintained infrastructure.

The Arlberg Trail – Peak Performance Meets Comfort

Lech, Zürs, Stuben, St. Christoph and St. Anton – some of the world’s most famous Alpine names – become part of one unforgettable journey on the Arlberg Trail. Hikers tackle three stages over three days, covering up to 40 kilometres and 5,000 vertical metres. Cable cars help reduce the elevation gain while still allowing for authentic mountain adventure.

In summer 2025, each stage now includes three route options:

  • The original sporting challenge
  • A more relaxed alternative
  • A new ultra-flexible variant for maximum adaptability to weather, fitness and personal preference

Stage overview – original version

  • Stage 1: Galzig cable car – Kaltenberghütte – Stuben
  • Stage 2: Flexen Pass – Seekopf cable car – Madloch – Lech
  • Stage 3: Trittkopf cable car – Stuttgarter Hütte – Valluga cable car – St. Anton

This is long-distance hiking with high-end infrastructure – ideal for ambitious explorers who appreciate both challenge and comfort.

The Lechquellenrunde – Hidden Gem for Alpine Purists

For those who crave solitude, altitude and authenticity: the Lechquellenrunde is one of the most stunning multi-day hut-to-hut tours in the Alps. Over six days and roughly 50 kilometres, it leads hikers through the remote Lechquellen Mountains in Vorarlberg. Five serviced mountain huts offer welcoming rest, hearty regional food and breathtaking views.

Highlights by stage:

  • Stage 1: Forest paths and high passes to the Biberacher Hut
  • Stage 2: Across wild meadows to the Göppinger Hut
  • Stage 3: Over Johannesjoch to the Freiburger Hut, overlooking Lake Formarin
  • Stage 4: To the Ravensburger Hut via the Gehrengrat and “Stone Sea”
  • Stage 5: Via Madlochjoch to the Stuttgarter Hut
  • Stage 6: Descent into Lech via the Bocksbach Saddle

This is a route for experienced hikers seeking silence, solitude and a profound connection to the Alpine world – far from the mainstream.
