Learning from experts

Snow & Safety Conference 2019

Blue skies, fresh powder snow, perfect conditions and yet a queasy feeling persists. After all, incomplete knowledge and vague rules of thumb can give a deceptive impression of safety when freeriding.

13/12/2019 - 14/12/2019

Snow & Safety Conference 2019

The 8th Snow & Safety Conference will take place from 13/12/2019 – 14/12/2019 in Lech am Arlberg. At the start of the season, professionals pass on the latest research and valuable tips. During theoretical and practical training units, responsible risk management in freeriding is trained.

All further information about the lectures and the programme will be published here.

Freeride Touring | 09:00 – 15:30

Light skis become wider, pin bindings safer and a boot that can do everything. Everybody is talking about Freeride Touring. The former Freeride World Tour rider Björn Heregger has been swearing by a set-up that can do everything for years. Björn takes you on tour with him. In addition to tech talk, the day will also be filled with avalanche themes, adapted behaviour in the terrain and freeride tactics for ascent and descent.

On request the participants have the possibility to test the newest material of the company DPS.

To be brought along: Ski equipment suitable for ascent, helmet, backpack, avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe

Participation requirements: Safe control of the skiing technique in the terrain with powder snow and changing snow conditions, appropriate physical condition for ascents (approx. 1h)

Cost: 70 € / person, excluding ski pass

Snow cover stability test | 09:00 – 13:00

In this workshop we will learn how to perform snow cover stability tests for avalanche forecasting and what conclusions they have regarding the stability and instability of the snow cover:

  • Introduction to the methodology of the different tests
  • Carrying out the tests in the freeride area
  • Interpretation of the results & discussion of their significance with regard to the expected avalanche activity
Snow and Safety Conference 2015

A great event that offers a great introduction to the topic of freeriding and safety. The ski resorts have the task to promote the knowledge in the freeride scene.

Safety Training | 09:00 – 11:00

Basic knowledge and skills in search for avalanche victims with avalanche transceiver and probe:

  • LVS device check (reception and transmission control)
  • Functionality of the LVS device
  • Handling the probe Coarse search, fine search and pinpointing

Emergency avalanche scenario with multiple burials | 11:30 - 13:00

The simulation of an avalanche emergency offers the opportunity to test one’s own knowledge and skills in the use of emergency equipment. The sequence of the rescue is simulated with multiple burials in combination with organized rescue up to shovel strategies and first aid for avalanche victims.

Snow and Safety Conference, Vorträge

Speaker Snow & Safety Conference 2019

„The focus of Jan-Thomas Fischer is on avalanche dynamics and his work begins when snow starts to move. Based in Innsbruck he works as head of the unit of snow and avalanches at the Austrian Research Centre for Forests (BFW), contributing to find the unanswered questions of avalanche research with computer and field experiments. He is also actively involved in avalanche education programs, as well as the recently founded Austrian Association for Snow and Avalanches (ÖGSL).“

is a lecturer in snow and avalanche research at the Universities of Graz and Vienna and has been teaching this topic at various institutions for 17 years, including as a professor at the Arctic University Centre in Spitsbergen. He leads numerous international research projects in the field of avalanche safety. However, a worldwide innovation of his research activities arose with the active assistance of the “Skilifte Lech” in his first and still existing field of research at the Arlberg: the flat snow depth measurement by means of laser scanning.

The "Snow and Safety Conference" has been our mission for six years now to raise awareness for the responsible handling of deep snow. However, the topic has existed for much longer here at Arlberg, as freeriding is deeply rooted in our skiing culture.
I am pleased that safety in the snow is a real concern for you and wish you many informative days with us at the Arlberg as well as a winter season 2018/19 which will certainly start very well with the SSC.
