Learning from experts

Snow & Safety Conference 2018

Blue skies, fresh powder snow, perfect conditions and yet a queasy feeling persists. After all, incomplete knowledge and vague rules of thumb can give a deceptive impression of safety when freeriding.

30/11/2018 - 01/12/2018

Snow & Safety Conference 2018

The 7th Snow & Safety Conference will take place from 30/11/2018 – 01/12/2018 in Zürs am Arlberg. At the start of the season, professionals pass on the latest research and valuable tips. During theoretical and practical training units, responsible risk management in freeriding is trained.

All further information about the lectures and the programme will be published here.

In this workshop we will learn how to perform snow cover stability tests for avalanche forecasting and what conclusions they have regarding the stability and instability of the snow cover:

  • Introduction to the methodology of the different tests
  •
Carrying out the tests in the freeride area
  • Interpretation of the results & discussion of their significance with regard to the expected avalanche activity
Snow and Safety Conference 2015

A great event that offers a great introduction to the topic of freeriding and safety. The ski resorts have the task to promote the knowledge in the freeride scene.

Snow and Safety Conference, Vorträge

Speaker Snow & Safety Conference 2018

Christoph Mitterer has been involved in the theory and practice of snow and avalanches for 10 years. His passion starts as a member of the Avalanche Commission in Ammertal and deepens later as a PhD student and research assistant at the SLF in Davos, the LWD Bayern and the University of Innsbruck. Christoph is currently coordinating the Interreg project ALBINA at the Tyrolean Avalanche Warning Service.

Born 1970 in Innsbruck, studied torrent and avalanche control in Vienna and Vancouver. In 1995 he completed his training as a state-certified ski touring instructor and in 1998 as a mountain rescuer. Since 1999 he has been deputy head of the Tyrol Avalanche Warning Service. Between 2009 and 2013 he chaired the European Avalanche Warning Service working group.

Born 1961 in Innsbruck, studied meteorology and glaciology in Innsbruck. After his studies he worked for two years at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar Research, most of it at a research station in Antarctica. Since 1999 he has been head of the Tyrol Avalanche Warning Service and since 2000 a sworn and court-certified expert for meteorology, avalanche science, avalanche accidents and avalanche protection. He has been teaching snow and avalanche science at the University since 2011.

Geographer and mountain guide. Longtime employee at SLF with focus on avalanche formation, avalanche forecasting and avalanche prevention, member of the core training team avalanche prevention snow sports (KAT), avalanche trainer and expert in avalanche accidents. Author and responsible for the avalanche prevention platform whiterisk.ch, as well as various avalanche training materials.

Known for his ski tours off the beaten track – stream Lukas Ruetz is intensively engaged in applied avalanche research and regularly works it out in the winter column “Schneegestöber”. His background: mountain rescuer, member of the avalanche commission, freelancer of the LWD Tyrol and above all: already at the beginning of 20 over 1.000 days of ski touring from all months of the year. In the meantime he has become a well-known link between snow research and our daily practice in the field.

She is a snowboarder, freeride, base jumper and wingsuit pilot. The Swiss Géraldine Fasnacht is a pioneer on a high level. Her passion? Opening new international summits, leaving your own mark…. in the snow and in the sky, in her life and in the sporting challenges she faces.

The "Snow and Safety Conference" has been our mission for six years now to raise awareness for the responsible handling of deep snow. However, the topic has existed for much longer here at Arlberg, as freeriding is deeply rooted in our skiing culture.
I am pleased that safety in the snow is a real concern for you and wish you many informative days with us at the Arlberg as well as a winter season 2018/19 which will certainly start very well with the SSC.
