Fantastic Gondolas

Dancing gondolas and glowing mountains

Hannes Heigenhauser Author

UPDATE:

Simply sensational. Shortly after Fantastic Gondolas 2017, I wrote this entry and it was already clear that we would submit to the Global Event Awards. But nobody would have thought it would be possible for us to win three awards at the world’s most important awards for events.

But one after the other:

First of all, we would like to thank curator and production manager Udo Kapeller, who manages every year with his team to stage a unique world of experience for the visitors. Without his creativity, know-how and dedication, Fantastic Gondolas would not have become such a special festival. This mixture of art, party and zeitgeist is really something special and must be experienced.
Thank you Udo!
We would also like to say thank you to all the helpers, the mountain railways and all those involved who make it possible for Fantastic Gondolas to be held every year with a great deal of personal commitment. THANK YOU!

Here is my personal review of Fantastic Gondolas 2017:

Every year the gondolas of the Rüfikopfbahnen are transformed into disco balls for a long night and the Rüfikopf becomes an open stage for a very special musical experience. In addition, there will be light installations decorating mountain peaks and ski slopes with bright colours and motifs. A special and probably unique mixture of art, music, dance, light installation and the mountain world of Lech Zürs, which fascinates visitors.

Opening at Rüfiplatz

After months of preparation, intensive planning and the search for the best artists, this energy is discharged with an impressive light show at Rüfiplatz. The first visitors are immediately electrified and walk through a black tunnel with immersive light and sound effects to the gondolas. The passage up trembles under the rhythm of the bass, which simulates and stimulates the heartbeat of the visitors. The light flickers, bright lights alternate with complete darkness.

Disco Gondolas

Already before we get into the disco gondola, we meet swinging beats. TJ Hicks provides a good atmosphere with his tracks, while we float upwards like in a colourfully illuminated UFO. Lech shines brightly in this starry night. Only this view to Lech at night is a magical experience.
The party gondola swings strongly back and forth at the train support in the middle. While on ski days one occasionally hears a “Wuuh”, tonight the whole gondola emits a loud cry of enthusiasm. That’s how you create the mood!

Rüfikopf – Party and Art

The gondola slows down and begins its docking manoeuvre at the Rüfikopf mountain station. The passengers enter the Fantastic Gondolas area or drive down again to continue celebrating in the gondola. I go outside and the sight almost takes my breath away…

Open Space

The light installations illuminate the surrounding mountains in changing motifs, while YouAndMe makes the celebrating people dance with racing beats. The night is cold and starry. So we can enjoy every moment and see the surrounding mountains darkly shimmering in the starlight. Already now it is clear: This will be a top event for every taste. We enjoy the light show and watch as the area before the outdoor days fills up more and more before we leave for the Kästle Museum to continue celebrating inside and watch drum rolls live in action.

Kästle Museum

There is a lot going on inside and the artists take turns throughout the night, just like the motifs on the mountain peaks outside. The result is a colourful whirlpool of different sensory impressions that draws every visitor with it and encourages them to dance. Hours pass like minutes, time is measured by the beats of the DJs at the mixing desk. In between, the disco gondolas are used again and again in order to follow other artists during the ascent and descent.

Midnight

Shortly after midnight we’re drawn back to the outdoor days to listen to Tom Findlay’s concert. The Grammy Nominee convinces us from the very first bar with his mixture of calm and ecstatically accelerating sounds. Around 1 o’clock in the morning the party comes to an end for us and we take the gondola down for the last time. With the view down to Lech reality catches up with us again. We felt like we were on a strange planet for several hours. The anticipation for Fantastic Gondolas 2018 is already there!
